Leveling and Experience
Every meaningful action in Natural 20 pays XP: kills, quest turn-ins, and successful d20 skill checks all contribute. Reach the level cap of 40 by spending time on whichever activities suit your build, then keep your stats and abilities growing along the way.
Overview
Section titled “Overview”Players progress from level 1 to a cap of level 40. Each level grants two permanent rewards:
- +1 ability point to spend on any of the six ability scores (STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA).
- +5 max HP added to your character’s total.
Open the Character Sheet with /sheet to view your current level, XP toward the next level, unspent ability points, and where to allocate them. Allocations are immediate and persistent.
Earning XP
Section titled “Earning XP”XP is earned through a weighted system: each source’s relative payout reflects its difficulty and engagement. Weights are multipliers on a base unit, so higher-weighted sources are dramatically more efficient at the same monster level.
| Source | Weight | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Nat20 kill | 1.0× | Tier-1 mob in a Nat20 group encounter |
| Champion kill | 2.5× | Champion-tier mob in a group |
| Boss kill | 5.0× | Standard boss leading a group |
| Dungeon boss kill | 8.0× | Hostile-POI bosses (highest payout in combat) |
| Quest phase complete | 7.0× | Each phase pays its own XP, not just the end |
| d20 skill check pass | 5.0× | Earned the moment a check succeeds |
| Vanilla mob kill | 0.5× | Half-rate to keep grinding feralcaves dry |
A few practical takeaways:
- Skill checks are real XP. Passing a Persuasion or Insight check during dialogue pays the same as defeating a standard boss. Talking is a build.
- Multi-phase quests reward you per phase. A three-phase quest delivers three full XP payments, not a single lump sum at the end.
- Nat20 mob packs are where the bulk of XP lives. Vanilla creatures pay half-rate by design; the system is tuned around the tiered group encounters.
The Leveling Curve
Section titled “The Leveling Curve”XP requirements grow 12% per level, so the climb from 1 to 40 stays meaningful end-to-end rather than plateauing in the mid-game.
| Level → Next | XP Required (approx) |
|---|---|
| 1 → 2 | 909 |
| 5 → 6 | 1,430 |
| 10 → 11 | 2,520 |
| 20 → 21 | 7,830 |
| 30 → 31 | 24,320 |
| 39 → 40 | 67,690 |
Cumulative XP to reach level 40 is roughly 685,000. There is no soft cap or diminishing return on XP gain: a Legendary boss kill at level 39 rewards the same percent of your bar as a kill at level 5, the bar is just longer.
Mob and area level scaling is independent of player level: encounters in higher zones don’t suddenly stop giving XP because you’re under-leveled, and outpacing a zone doesn’t lock you out of its rewards. Drop into whatever content suits your group; the XP follows.
