Natural 20 is an RPG mod for Hytale that combines D&D-style quests and dialogue with ARPG-style loot and progression. Multi-phase quests with d20 skill checks are the core gameplay loop. Leveling, loot, and tiered encounters scale to support questing.
Features
Multi-Phase Quests
Skyrim-style quests split into multiple phases, each paying its own XP and a freshly rolled item. Six objective types are available: Collect Resources, Kill Mobs, Kill Boss, Fetch Item, Peaceful Fetch, and Talk to NPC. A three-phase quest pays three rewards, not one bundle at the end.
Dialogue & Skill Checks
Conversations branch on real d20 rolls. Pick a [Persuasion] or [Intimidation] response, watch the dice land, see whether you clear the DC. Each NPC tracks disposition with each player on a 0–100 scale, swinging skill checks into advantage or disadvantage.
Ability Scores & XP
Six D&D ability scores (STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA) from 0 to 30 drive every dice roll, gear affix, and combat formula. Earn XP from every quest phase to level up to 40, spending ability points to grow the stats that fit your build.
Loot & Gear Affixes
Items roll across five rarity tiers with affixes from a dozen families: crit, bleed, life leech, elemental damage, resistances, and party buffs. Every affix scales with the matching ability score.
Champion & Boss Encounters
Nat20 mobs spawn in packs led by named bosses, tinted by difficulty tier from green Uncommon to gold Legendary. Higher tiers stack affixes, hit harder, and drop more loot.
Party Play
Accept a quest with a party and the whole group locks in. Progress is shared, every eligible member rolls their own unique item at turn-in, and friendly fire is blocked even on PVP-enabled servers.

Natural 20 now runs on Hytale Update 5. This is a compatibility release: the focus is supporting the latest Hytale version, with no new gameplay systems.

- • Updated for Hytale Update 5 (server SDK 0.5.3). v1.1.0 requires an Update 5 server and is not compatible with Update 4.
- • Rebuilt the Natural20-Patches early plugin for Update 5's Java 25 runtime. Self-hosted servers must deploy the new patches jar alongside the mod.
Fixed
- • Affix loot now appears in world-generated loot chests (dungeons, ruins) and in settlement chests, generated the first time you open the chest. Previously a chest could hand out a duplicate of a non-stackable item (shown as a stack of two), its contents could briefly render as "invalid item" on opening, and nat20 loot could reappear in chests you had already emptied, broken and re-placed, or crafted yourself. Loot is now generated once on first open, never duplicates, and never lands in chests you placed yourself.
- • Longswords, clubs, and one-handed axes can now block on right-click, with the proper guard reticle and stamina cost. Hytale ships these three weapon groups without a wired-up block (only the guard animation played, with no actual damage reduction); Natural 20 binds them to the standard melee guard.
- • Quest area markers (the ring outlining a quest's location) again appear only while the world map is open, not on the compass. Update 5 removed the signal the mod used to detect an open map; the early plugin now restores it.
